The Competition
To celebrate 50 years of Corrie, Imperial Leather, sponsored a unique competition for schools to create a new character and storyline for the popular TV programme.
Pupils from year 9 and 10 from schools all around the country entered the competition.
Entries were shortlisted and the top ten scripts were then judged by the Coronation Street script department, as well as cast members.

It was a tough day for the Corrie script writing team; with such an exciting range of shortlisted storylines to choose from, they had their work cut out deciding which one
should be crowned the winner.
There were several key elements that the judges
were looking for in each entry to help them decide
which one of them was worthy of a winning place.
The script writers were looking at how engaging
each storyline was and how the new character in
each one was introduced. They were looking at how
well the new character interacts with the other Corrie
characters and whether Corrie viewers would want
to see that character again.
Viewers are at the heart of every Coronation Street storyline and with this in mind, the judges were looking very closely at how the storylines were written: did they contain humour as well as drama? Would the plot of the storyline appeal to viewers? Is the storyline one that Corrie viewers would expect to see on the programme? Would viewers want to know what happens next?

After reading through, discussing and then judging the wealth of incredibly creative and well thought out shortlisted submissions, the winner and runner-up were then chosen.
The storyline that the Corrie script writers felt best met
the judging criteria was from a Year 10 Media Studies
class at Maesydderwen Comprehensive in Powys.
The pupils at Maesydderwen Comprehensive
introduced a new character called Milo Jones, an 18 year old from a small
town in the South Wales valleys whose arrival on the Street causes a real stir!
The script writers unanimously agreed that the storyline submitted by Maesydderwen Comprehensive was a very impressive piece of work which displayed maturity, great dramatic instincts and an assured grasp of Coronation Street's characters and style. They admired the clear, easy to read style of the document, the characterful writing, original storytelling and sense of fun. In a group of strong entries, Maesydderwen Comprehensive's storyline was head and shoulders above the rest and the unanimous winner. The script writers are now looking forward to meeting the group as part of their prize.

The group of Year 10 Media Studies pupils and their teacher Maesydderwen Comprehensive have a very exciting prize to look forward to, winning not one but two money-can't buy experiences! Jonathan Harvey and Jan McVerry from Coronation Street's script writing team will be visiting Maesydderwen Comprehensive along with cast member Michelle Keegan to host a script-writing workshop in the school, which promises to be a great experience for the pupils. Furthermore, five pupils will be treading Corrie's famous cobbles on a tour of the set on a VIP Day and their teacher will have the once-in-a-lifetime experience of taking part in the filming of a scene!
Maesydderwen Comprehensive's winning storyline introduced a new character, Milo, an 18-year-old from a small town in South Wales. He has an interesting yet likeable background and has his eye set on big things but will something from his past make an ugly appearance?
Milo's arrival on the street causes a big stir. From bravado and skill to disappointment and weakness, Milo and the characters from the Street face a range of experiences in Maesydderwen Comprehensive's gripping storyline.
Hayley's hen night ends in a somewhat unusual way for Milo and as events take a turn for the worst for him, his private life starts to open up. But he certainly proves he has his uses in the Rovers Return and in the Underworld Factory.
There are plenty of characters that take a shine to good-looking Milo - Rosie Webster being one of them, but who is Milo interested in and what will David Platt make of Milo's effect on the girls?
Will issues from Milo's past be resolved? Will he reach his goals? One thing's for sure, he'd better be on his guard...
